Female Nude, Lotus Leaf

1975 (Printed later)

Raghu Rai

What’s particularly funny to me is the fact this photograph was made and titled with such seriousness. Well, it was 1975, so, I guess…it was a ‘different time’?

Yes, there has been a long history of botanical forms being compared to female anatomies, as well as the depiction of flora as euphemisms for sex around the world. The Everything reminds me of her memes are simply the latest iteration of this idea. But that doesn’t make this tastefully composed, black-and-white photograph any less funny to me. I remain amused that the photographer chose to unironically make this. And that even though this photograph was made in 1975, the print itself was made ‘later’. It could still have been titled differently, even left untitled, and yet.

Everything reminds me of her

It’s the spelling out of the photographer’s intention in their captions that always gets me. As though you could not infer it yourself, as though you were in doubt about whether you were really seeing what you were seeing, as though you had to be told by the photographer, yes, I am intimate with the female anatomy, I see it everywhere! Nature is a woman, behold her abundant form.

I am reminded of the recent internet trend of the I should call him/her and more directly, the Everything reminds me of her memes.
